First-ever made-in-India chip from Tata Electronics gets a 'launch timeline'

Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that India's first "Made-in-India" semiconductor chip will be launched by September or October 2025. The announcement was made during a press conference in Bengaluru, where Vaishnaw highlighted the government's commitment to advancing the country's semiconductor industry.

The chip, developed in collaboration with Tata Electronics and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), will be produced at India's first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. This initiative is part of the broader Semicon India program , which was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. The program aims to establish a comprehensive semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.

Vaishnaw also announced that the government has granted Rs 334 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, for research and development in gallium nitride (GaN) technology. GaN is a key component in semiconductors used in telecom and power applications.

Along with this, Vaishnaw also announced the launch of the India AI Mission portal. The portal is expected to go live within the next 7-8 days, providing a robust platform for stakeholders to request compute capacity.

The India AI Mission aims to democratise access to high-performance computing resources, offering around 14,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to support AI development. These GPUs will be sourced from ten shortlisted companies, including Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, Tata Communications, and AWS's managed service providers.

The portal will enable central ministries, state governments, and other stakeholders to request compute capacity at subsidized rates, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for AI research and development.
